What Could Be Causing Your Knee Pain?

Causes of knee pain range anywhere from cartilage deterioration to infectious diseases, dull pain to sharp and stabbing pain. Whatever the situation, knee pain is just that– a pain. It can make it difficult to walk or go about the activities you normally enjoy. By understanding the causes of knee pain, you may be able to help yourself or a loved one know when it’s time to seek treatment.

Practically any form of arthritis can affect the knee joints and bring on pain.

Arthritis types:

Osteoarthritis: the breakdown of cartilage between the joints.

Rheumatoid arthritis: a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs when the body’s immune system attacks the thin membrane that normally lines the joints.

Juvenile arthritis: affects children aged 16 or younger.

Gout: occurs when there is an excess of a particular bodily waste product in the circulatory system that becomes deposited in bodily tissues.

Psoriatic arthritis: accompanied by the skin disease psoriasis.

Infectious arthritis: brought on by an infection inside the joint that spreads through the bloodstream.

Causes of knee pain brought on by disease:

Lupus: causes the body’s immune system to attack healthy tissues, which can lead to inflammation and pain in the knee and other joints.

Lyme disease: caused by the bite of an infected tick, the knee is often the first joint affected by Lyme disease.

Knee pain can also be brought on by injury. In fact, knees are one of the joints that are most prone to injury. Knee injuries can occur suddenly when it is hit or twisted too far. They can also develop over time such as from consistent stress that wears the knees down.

The most common types of knee injuries:

Meniscal injuries: The menisci protect the joint and act as shock absorbers between the femur and tibia. The menisci get torn when the knee is bent or twisted beyond its normal range of motion.

Ligament injuries: The ligaments in the knees can become injured from sudden twisting in the joint or a direct blow to the outside of the knee.

Tendon injuries: this type of injury occurs from overworking or overstretching the knee joint.
