Baker’s Cyst: Symptoms, Causes, & Treatments
A Baker’s cyst is the result of problems with the knee joint, such as osteoarthritis or torn cartilage. When the knee joint is stressed it can produce too much fluid, which accumulates and leads to a Baker’s cyst. Symptoms may worsen if the knee has been active for a period of time. It often causes swelling and discomfort, but various treatments have been shown to provide relief.
Symptoms:
- Bulge behind the knee
- Swelling behind the knee or leg
- Joint stiffness and tightness
- Inability to fully flex the knee
Each joint in the body has a sac of synovial fluid that lubricates it and helps to reduce friction during movement. When there is damage to the joint, the body naturally produces more fluid to protect it. This usually occurs after untreated inflammation. Baker’s cysts may go away on their own, but medical treatment is recommended. It is possible for the cyst to burst on its own, causing sharp pain, swelling, redness, and feeling of water running down your calf. Since these symptoms closely resemble those of a blood clot, it is important to get a medical evaluation to prevent a threatening injury. A Baker’s cyst is usually diagnosed with a physical examination, but ultrasounds, x-rays, and MRIs may be required.
Treatments:
- Medication – Corticosteroid medication can relieve pain but doesn’t prevent reoccurrence.
- Fluid Drainage – Using ultrasound-guidance, a doctor can drain the fluid and relieve all symptoms.
- Physical Therapy – Strengthening exercises, icing the joint, compression wraps, and braces can reduce symptoms and preserve knee function.
Your doctor will try to treat the underlying cause of the cyst. If it was the result of torn cartilage, they may recommend surgery to remove or repair it. Cysts associated with osteoarthritis usually improve with the treatment of arthritis.
What You Can Do:
- R.I.C.E. – rest, ice, compression, and elevation
- Reduce your physical activity
- Monitor your symptoms and progress
