Is Ice or Heat Better For Joint Inflammation?

Inflammatory arthritis describes a variety of conditions characterized by pain, swelling, tenderness and sensation of warmth in the joints. Some types of arthritis that are linked to inflammation include:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
  • Psoriatic arthritis (PsA)
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE, lupus)
  • Gout
  • Ankylosing spondylitis (AS)

With these diseases, the immune system does not work properly and releases inflammatory hormones that can cause joint pain and swelling.

  Symptoms of joint inflammation

  • Redness
  • Joint swelling
  • Joint pain
  • Joint stiffness
  • Loss of joint function

Which is better to reduce inflammation: Ice or Heat?

Both hot and cold therapies are holistic options that can ease pain, stiffness and swelling.

Cold Therapy: Cold therapy is used to reduce inflammation, swelling and pain related to arthritis and overexertion. Cold compresses reduce swelling and inflammation by constricting the blood vessels. Cold therapy can also slow the production of joint fluid; too much joint fluid can contribute to swelling and discomfort. Keep in mind that cold compresses should not be applied for longer than 20 minutes at a time, although it can be repeated throughout the day.

Heat Therapy: Heat therapy is great for relaxing the muscles and lubricating the joints. Warmth increases the pliability of the muscles, decreasing joint stiffness. Heat therapy also stimulates joint fluid, which can increase joint lubrication and deliver vital nutrients to joint tissue.
