How To Protect The Knees During Exercise

Exercise is great for the body. It’s a great way to strengthen the joints and muscles and prevents musculoskeletal conditions brought on by age. However, regardless of age or level of activity, you should take certain precautions to make sure your knees and other joints aren’t being damaged.

  • Lighten the load. Excess weight on the knees increases the burden of walking or exercising. It increases joint degeneration and the risk of osteoarthritis. Maintaining a healthy weight is key.
  • Well-rounded muscle strengthening. A common mistake is neglecting certain muscles and focusing on one or two muscle groups. Quads and hamstrings are important, but so are the hip abductors and adductors and calf muscles.
  • When in doubt, RICE it. If you sprain or strain a muscle, or feel abnormal pain,  remember RICE: rest, ice, compression, and elevation. This process reduces pain and inflammation.
  • Know your limits. Overuse is a very easy way to injure the knees. Switch up your workouts to not overwork one muscle group. Make sure you alternate your workouts and pay attention to soreness and sensitivity.
